LEPSA Supplies FRP Equipment for the new SX Plant: Mina Justa - Peru

Mina Justa is a copper ore deposit, located in San Juan de Marcona, Ica-Peru, at 800m above sea level. The total project cost is estimated at US $1.6 b, and it is considered one of the largest mining projects in Peru for the 2019-2020 period.

The Project features two open pits and two different refining plants, one for processing sulfurous ores and one for copper oxides. The later requires a leaching plant, followed by solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW).

Due to our vast experience over 20 years in the design and manufacture of FRP equipment, in May 2018, AUSENCO, on behalf or MARCOBRE, awarded LEPSA for the engineering and manufacture of different equipment for the process plant, such as:

  1. FRP storage tanks and process equipment:

LEPSA has supplied over 50 storage tanks and process equipment for various parts of the plant, at different sizes and level of complexity. These equipment includes mixer tanks, reactors, launder channels, pump columns, and storage of electrolytes, acids, and organic.

  1. Supply of FRP Settlers:

As an industry leader in the region and thanks to previous experiences in the manufacture of similar equipment, LEPSA was able to design and manufacture of five (05) settlers, made entirely in FRP, with no steel structure. The settlers also featured side shrouding and a roof, all done in FRP as well. The equipment is 68.11 ft long x 68.11 ft wide x 3.3 ft high and 13.9 ft high to the top of the roof, being the first and the largest installed in Peru and the region.

All equipment was design, manufactured, and tested in reference to industry accepted standards, such as ASME RTP-1 and BS EN 13121-3; and made from highly corrosion resistant vinyl ester resins, which are compatible to the duty.

This project set a big challenge for LEPSA’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities, not only due to the size of the equipment, but also for the client’s demand in terms of schedule and quality. However, thanks to our professional staff with over 20 years of experience, LEPSA passed the challenge with flying colors.

Equipment was delivered from July 2019 to January 2020, to the entire satisfaction of AUSENCO and MARCOBRE.
