Gas Cooling Tower for Southern Peru requested by Jacobs

In February 2016, LEPSA participated and won an international bidding process for the engineering and manufacture of a new GAS COOLING TOWER for JACOBS PERU on behalf of the owner, mining company SOUTHERN PERU COOPER CORPORATION.

The Ø 14.1 ft x 31.2 ft Gas Cooling Tower was designed for positive and vacuum pressure, as well as seismic loadings, all combined in an extremely aggressive corrosion environment, which required a precise materials selection for resin.

The equipment was manufactured by hoop filament winding, which features the use of unidirectional fabrics. Some internal accessories, including the 14.1 ft x 31.2 ft media support grating beams, and spraying piping, were manufactured 100% in FRP. Other internals, where chemical reactions created an extremely aggressive environment, were manufactured in dual laminate.

During the engineering stage, LEPSA brought all its experience, allowing to optimize construction details, which improve the structural integrity of the equipment, and reduced manufacturing time and costs.

The equipment featured lifting trunnions, which facilitate the handling of the equipment on site. The installation required to place the equipment at the same location of the old one, for which the tolerances for the location of connecting nozzles were very tight but, LEPSA achieved to produce the equipment with the correct dimensions by performing in-factory checks, using surveying laser equipment.
